Abstract

Total phenolic and flavonoid content, DPPH radical scavenging and ferrous ion chelating activity analysis were performed on Enteromorpha multiramosa, Ulva intestinalis, Laurencia nidifica, Liagora viscida, Halopteris scoparia and Cystoseira mediterranea species collected from Iskenderun Gulf coast, Iskenderun, Hatay, Turkey. Folin-Ciocalteu and AlCl3 methods were used for analysis of total phenolic content and flavonoid content analysis, respectively. The red algae Liagora viscida and Laurencia nidifica presented the highest TPC with 72.33 +/- 6.32 and 69.35 +/- 2.98 mg GAE g(-1) extract, respectively. The red algae Liagora viscida and green algae Ulva intestinalis presented the highest TFC values with 15.60 +/- 0.98 and 8.26 +/- 0.73mg QE g(-1) extract, respectively. Brown algae Cystoseira mediterranea extract exhibited the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity with185.81 +/- 28.15 mu g/mL EC50 value (). Cystoseria mediterranea and Halopteris scoparia showed the highest ferrous ion chelating activity with the EC50 values of 35.77 +/- 1,77 and 16.27 +/- 1.12(a) respectively. To our knowledge, our results first describe the antioxidant properties of Enteromorpha multiramosa, Laurencia nidifica, Liagora viscida, Cystoseira mediterranea among the algae species which we were analysed; Halopteris scoparia and Cystoseira mediterranea with highest DPPH radical scavenging and ferrous reducing activity, and Liagora viscida and Laurencia nidifica species with high total phenolic content might be important for further studies in biomedical applications.
